PLAYER REVIEW - #6 Marco Cantelli

On the back of an 8-3 defeat to Virtusestri in the Liguria Cup, and a poor start to the league campaign (3-3, then translated into a 0-4 defeat, in which he scored his first goal of the season against Compagnia delle Indie, a further 3-4 defeat he sat out on, through injury - against Las Cuevas), Marco Cantelli made the gaffer a promise... "We shall not be losing any further games, actually, we're going to be winning them all from now on".
That was very much the case for at least 13 of the following games, all seeing the Pars collecting full points one way or another. And boy was he instrumental in achieving that, to say the least.
He managed a hat-trick to hand Dunfermline their first victory of the season by 5 goals to 3. Not bad for a start to the holding on of his promise.
A brace followed amidst the disposing of minnows Aston Villa (9-2), but he gave further signs of his great skills and ability when he scored yet another hat-trick in the derby rival against Never Alone Soccer, a game that started to mark the extent of The Pars' collective strength as the Fifers came out worthy 5-3 victors.
One week later, he scored the opening goal against Internazionale, in a game which saw the Pars triumph by 5 goals to 1.
After the Christmas break, he returned in massive fashion, and delivered a brace against Internazionale, particularly his second goal, on the volley, with his left, as you like it, bottom corner... was absolutely brilliant!!!
He scored the opener in a mouthwatering game against Amici di Berto and, although he wasn't on target against Sampierdarena the following week, he once again opened the scoring in a tense 6-5 win over Le Café.
Another piece of skill came against Borussia, as his shot on the turn - once again, on the volley - paved the way for Dunfermline to beat their opponents by 4 goals to 2.
He scored twice in the early stages of the 6-3 victory over Compagnia delle Indie, on Matchday 12, before netting again against Las Cuevas.
He picked up a third season caution on that date, though, which booked him a slot on the sidelines against New Reds, but he once again bounced back and scored 3 against Aston Villa at home in a 9-1 win.
He almost single-handedly salvaged a point and was one of few bright lights in a 3-3 draw against Never Alone Soccer, as he scored with his head, before settling matters minutes from time with a neat finish from outside the box.
Then he netted one more in a 9-3 win over minnows Internazionale.
But the full extent of his power within the team came as Dunfermline got past Xeneixes, a little more hardly than expected.
Marco scored all five goals in an unbelievable 5-4 comeback, opening the scoring in the first half, equalising at 2-2 in the second before Xeneixes unexpectedly dug a two-goal-cushion.
Well, our No 6 scored with his left finding the narrowest of paths to stick the ball in, then produced a run and a thunder of an effort to make it 4-4 from outside the area.
Finished? Not quite, as he gave two extra vital points to his side, with a long range shot which left the keeper wrongfooted.
The early signs of discomfort shown by the side during that game , unfortunately fully materialised one week later, though, as the lads were thumped at the hands of Amici di Berto in a not so memorable 6-2 defeat.
However, there was little time to whinge and cry their hearts out, as the most important game of the regular season was looming, against Sampierdarena.
And Marco, rising to the occasion, sealed that very game with virtually the last kick of the game, as he latched on a loose ball and squeezed it past Bruzzone to make it 2-1 and hand Dunfermline the mathematical certainty of a top two berth.
Even so, Marco looked to have some unfinished job to attend to, and he produced a 4 goal performance against Le Café, amid a 5-4 home win, before concluding his regular season with yet another hat-trick, against Borussia, in a game whose final scoreline read Dunfermline 4 Borussia 3.
The playoff stage came, and he picked up where he'd left off, with two goals sealing a 4-1 win over Moro Populars which, much to his teammates' disarray, remained his last of the season.
On Matchday 2 of the finals, against Hellas Begato, Marco's light, which had been shining so very brightly during the course of the whole season, was suddenly turned off as he seriously injured two main ligaments in his right ankle, the extent of that mishap yet to be fully assessed by the medical staff, but surely leaving little signs of hope to see him when the 2008/2009 campaign gets underway in October.
Hopefully, though, he'll have recovered in time to contribute to yet another promotion pushing season, his 39 goals this term being the best credential to his potential.

PLAYER REVIEW - #5 Aldo Marletta

8th June 2008, 10 PM or thereabouts. Dunfermline have just officially secured promotion to Division B, after a hard-fought 5-3 win over season rivals Amici di Berto.
3 of those 5 goals came from Aldo Marletta, who also provided Andrea Borreani with a fine delivery and contributed to the remaining goal, scored by Fabio Frassinelli, with a mis-hit the defender-turned-forward deflected goalwards.
Arguably the perfect night, to brilliantly cap a positive season. The man scored a few important goals, getting his account underway on Division C matchday one, equalising with the last kick of the game against Compagnia delle Indie, only for AICS to later quash that result and hand Indie a 4-0 win following the wrongful fielding of defender Claudio Urru.
Another not so relevant goal came against Las Cuevas one week later, The Pars ending the game on the wrong end of a 4-3 scoreline.
After missing out on the first 4 wins of the club through duty, Clegg returned to the fold and placed his name on the scoresheet against Xeneixes, but his first real moment of brilliance came against Amici di Berto (omen?) as he netted the first of a fine string of free-kicks to give Dunfermline a provisional 2-1 lead, before capping his and his team's performance with a finish from close range to make it 4-1.
Converted an equalising penalty-kick against Sampierdarena, before Dunfermline were somewhat handed back what they'd been deprived of and a 4-0 win was awarded as Sampierdarena committed an offence that was similar to the one The Pars were penalised for against Indie.
Then it was only glory against Le Café, as Marletta scored 4 times, 2 of which from the spot, in a 6-5 win which was sealed by a juggling-and-volley goal which left opponents and team-mates stunned.
Another 2 goals against Borussia to end the first part of the season on a high, only for the second to commence in quite some similar fashion, as a long range dipping effort against Compagnie helped his side en route to a 6-3 win.
Yet another free-kick against Las Cuevas, followed by a hat-trick against New Reds to seal a somewhat moment of magic, which continued with another 3 goals against minnows Aston Villa Scassi, just before the lads headed to Scotland to meet their counterparts, the real Dunfermline Athletic Football Club.
One of his worst performance of the whole season came against Never Alone, as he failed to score and was yellow-carded for a banal charge. That match marked the beginning of a dipping form stint, which was only partly disguised by a brace against Internazionale, amid a way too easy 9-3 victory over the eventual bottom side in the group.
A far from memorable performance against Xeneixes, as Cantelli scored all 5 goals on a night when nerves were far more visible than skills, before the whole team collapsed to their worst collective display, a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Amici di Berto which also cost Dunfermline the league group leadership - provisionally that was...
One week after such thumping was incurred, Dunfermline faced Sampierdarena, and Clegg failed to convert a penalty spot when the scores were blank. Soon after that, Sampierdarena took the lead and for a moment leapfrogged The Pars to second place, but Buccianti's delivery was far too inviting and the captain managed to make amends for his earlier mistake and levelled things up, before Cantelli sealed a glorious win at the death, the Scots contextually regaining top spot.
Missed out on the return match against Le Café through suspension, but delivered yet another free-kick gem on the final matchday of the regular season against Borussia.
His best form suddenly materialised again when it was most needed by the team, at the playoff stage, where he scored from another long range free-kick in the opening game against Moro Populars.
He scored the only goal in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Hellas Begato the following week, but he fully carried the burden on his shoulders in one of the most delicate games of the season, as Dunfermline took on Massacroni and unexpectedly found themselves 2 goals up after a handful of minutes.
Well, he scored the first (free-kick, what else?) in quite some style and made the second, Buccianti providing the thinnest (or non-existing, depending on your viewpoint - Buccia will forgive us) of deflections to make it 2-0.
Dunfermline incurred a mounting comeback by Massacroni, though, and the final result read 2-2, but that was enough to qualify Dunfermline directly to the quarter finals.
And this is where this tale began, Clegg scored his first ever header from a fantastic Bovalino delivery, before netting two more in the second half, the former an effort from just outside the box, the latter a piece of individual skill capped by a close range neat finish after getting past a couple of opponents.
No glory on the semifinal day, against Alliance Utd, but 30 goals are hardly something to complain about when you're a midfielder.

___________________________________________________

PLAYER REVIEW - #2 Alberto Buccianti

Our very own Tuscan striker scored the first and last goal of the league season, the first coming against Compagnia delle Indie back in November 2007, the last against Alliance Utd in an unfortunate semifinal.

He's been rarely pretty to watch, but boy has he made his contribution felt by finding the goals at the right times.

He hit the ground running at the beginning of the season and came across a bit of a blip towards the end of it, and his range of goals is not as widespread as Cristiano Ronaldo's, but he's often scored the relevant ones.

After scoring one of the goals in the only Cup tie played out by The Pars, a sore 8-3 defeat, and the already mentioned opener against Indie, a marvel of a strike against Las Cuevas followed, before he got the first win of the season underway with a neat strike away to New Reds Ponente. A sumptuous brace against Never Alone Soccer, on the back of a four-goal performance against minnows Aston Villa, yet another couple of braces against Internazionale and Xeneixes, a tiny but vital deflection away to Berto, off his back at home against Sampierdarena.

During the second part of the season, he focused on relevance rather than big numbers, and managed to score one more against Compagnia, and two against Las Cuevas, two neat finishes following as many brilliant collective moves. Scored when New Reds and Dunfermline meet in reverse fixtures at the G.Mora ground, before striking again, in customary style, at home to Internazionale.

On target again to open the scoring against Berto, in a somewhat unfortunate game which saw the Pars at the wrong end of a 6-2 scoreline, but he bounced back from that, as well as the rest of the team, when he produced the finest of deliveries to allow Marletta to equalise away to Sampierdarena, just before Cantelli sealed a glorious win at the death.

A further goal and a fantastic assist, for Cantelli, against Le Café, before the regular season went curtains.

At the finals stage, he scored (?) against Massacroni, a header so fine and tiny that the match footage couldn't frame it properly (??), but his 2-1 goal against Alliance had given the Pars hope to make it to the Division C final, before the Cabella bros produced an incredible turnaround to kick the Scots out.

A positive season, one to build upon for next one, which will saw Dunfermline ply their trade on Division B grounds, 25 goals to his name and a hard gained right to wear a striker's number next term.

____________________________

PLAYER REVIEW - #1 Marco Semino

Sunday, 11th November 2007. The Pars have just been - or are on the verge of being - abandoned by their sponsor, who happens to be their goalkeeper as well.
Matteo Bovalino, one of the veterans from last season, comes up with quite an idea as he dials Marco Semino's number and asks him to join the side for the first game of the league, against much feared Compagnia delle Indie.
As a result of that call, Semino produces a stunning debut performance, and the team notches a 3-3 draw no one could've hoped for, although such result will be overturned by an AICS decision a week later or so.
Marco Semino's been THE goalkeeper of the season, nearing 38 years of age he's jumped and dived beautifully all season long.
Name it, he's done it, saves from a wide range of technique skills in goal, and he's also been deployed as an outfield player once, in one of the decisive games of the season again, at the Excellence Playoff stage against Massacroni.
Even then, he produced an immaculate performance, proving his past days as a defender at semi-pro level.
An influential figure on and off the pitch, there's no doubt he will be one of the pillars of the 2008/2009 Division B campaign.
_____________________________

ANALYSIS - Alliance Utd

MARCO SEMINO
As always, he kept his side in business courtesy of a string of fine saves. Not much he could've done about the goals, he will surely remain first choice goalkeeper next season.

FABIO FRASSINELLI
Even when not at his best, he's the most accomplished defender in the fold. That's why his teammates were surprised as he was withdrawn at the beginning of the second half. His presence was sorely missed throughout during the whole period.

DAVIDE FILIPPI
Nearly, the perfect night. He passed, ran and marked, putting up a fight and tackling effectively. Got cautioned in a debatable manner, which would've cost him the final had the lads qualified for it. One of the best men of the season.
Quasi la serata perfetta. Passa, corre e marca, lotta e compie tackles a ripetizione.

GIUSEPPE BUTTITTA
Not that he holds any particular responsibilities concerning the goals, but his presence on the pitch was not as self assured as in other occasions

MATTEO BOVALINO
What a player! His delivery for Buccianti on the 2-1 goal was outstanding, as was his contribution throughout.

ALDO MARLETTA
As all the rest of the team, he ended a marvellous season on a bit of a sore note, even though the club's achievements are far more important than one night's let down.
Could've scored one or two, but it wasn't to be, not last night.

ANDREA BORREANI
Caused havoc for as long as he was on the pitch. He really proved his worth and it's a shame AICS regulations didn't allow him to play alongside Di Noto. He'll probably depart the club, but his contribution, albeit marred by injuries, was absolutely relevant.

Introduced for Borreani, he scored a ragy goal to equalise for The Pars. His passing skills have come in handy for his side all season long.

ALBERTO BUCCIANTI
He may not be the prettiest to watch of attackers, but once again he proved his goalscoring abilities at a critical stage of the game. Unfortunately, his goal, which gave Dunfermline the lead, was cancelled off later on.

GAFFER LUIGI VANIN
How on earth did he manage to substitute Frassinelli at half time, well that'll remain a mystery. However, credit to him, he drove his side to promotion and will coach a Division B team next season.
Come abbia fatto a sostituire Frassinelli all'intervallo, rimarrà un mistero.

REFEREE GAIA MICHELOTTI
A good ref with a firm handling of proceedings.
Un buon arbitro con un'interpretazione ferma.

ALLIANCE UTD - DUNFERMLINE 3-2

It's over. Just a step away from the final, Dunfermline were befallen and defeated at the hands of an impressive Alliance Utd side.
It was a tight game, one which could've ended either way, but Alliance, credit to them, somewhat deserved what they got.
Dunfermline won't have many regrets, after a wonderful season that was sealed by promotion after beating Amici di Berto last Sunday, and although a final encounter against Sampierdarena, who disposed of Massacroni in the other semifinal, would've been a massive ending to the 2007/2008 campaign, the Pars have reached far beyond their expectations and will now be able to start planning on the next season.

Gaffer Vanin deployed Semino in goal, Frassinelli and Filippi at the back, while Marletta took charge in the middle of the park, Borreani and Bovalino being fielded on the flanks.
Buccianti started upfront and referee Gaia Michelotti got proceedings underway.
Alliance moved the ball around well during the early stages of the game, and Semino had a lot of work to do to keep them out, notably as he produced a string of diving saves to deny the Cabella brothers.
There was little the keeper could do, though, as the elder sibling, Manuel, smashed a gem of a volley past him to establish Alliance in the lead.
Dunfermline tried to hit back and Marletta had a shot over the bar following a well worked knock back from Bovalino, while Borreani kept on producing fine runs and getting past men, to no particular extent, though, as the first half ended with the Pars trailing by one goal to nil.

HALF TIME: ALLIANCE UTD 1, DUNFERMLINE 0

To the surprise of many, Frassinelli was withdrawn at the beginning of the second half, replaced by Buttitta. Dunfermline kept on struggling, often caught in between fine strings of passes by United's midfield pack.
Even so, The Pars somewhat resurged to their fame and equalised, as Di Noto was introduced for Borreani and scored following an initial effort that got blocked by a defender, only for the midfield player to try again with better luck.
Only a few minutes later, Dunfermline overturned the first half deficit, as Marletta played a square ball into Bovalino's path. Bovalino produced a fine delivery in towards Buccianti, and the Tuscan striker placed the ball past Pertile, Alliance goalkeeper, in quite some style from close range to make it 2-1.
The somewhat shocking Pars' lead was cancelled off as Andrea Cabella scored a cracker from an incredibly well taken free-kick from the right hand side, the ball describing a trajectory which left Semino with no hope whatsoever en route to the top left corner.
Dunfermline pushed their ranks forward, looking unfazed by Alliance equaliser, but were found out on a counter attacking move which sealed the win - and a spot in the final - for United, just one minute from time.

FULL TIME: Alliance Utd 3, Dunfermline 2

E' finita.

PRIMO TEMPO: Alliance Utd 1, Dunfermline 0

PREVIEW - Alliance Utd

Dunfermline and Alliance Utd have set up a semifinal tie which shall be played out at the Ca de Rissi ground on Wednesday 11th June, kick-off 8.30 PM.
The other sides that have reached Division B status, Massacroni and Sampierdarena, will battle it out at the same venue, signifying that direct promotion could only be gained by clubs who plied their trade in groups B and D during the regular season.
Dunfermline and Alliance have never met before, and while the former won their own league group and qualified to the quarter finals as runners up from their Excellence Playoff four side group, Alliance did it the other way around, as they ended up occupying the runners up spot at the end of the regular season but won their Excellence group, albeit on goal difference after finishing level on points with Condo Utd.
At the knockout stage, then, Dunfermline kicked out their long standing rivals, Amici di Berto, courtesy of a sublime collective performance to win 5-3, while Alliance had it much easier as they eased past New Reds Ponente, on a 2 goal deficit by the time a third sending off in the game sealed a premature ending to the game.

Di Noto and Buccianti will return to The Pars' fold following their respective suspensions, and while their main marksman Marco Cantelli is still sidelined with an ankle injury, all other members of the squad will be at gaffer Vanin's disposal.
Semino should start in goal ahead of Perugini, with Filippi, Frassinelli and Buttitta all fit to play at the back.
Marletta, Bovalino and either Borreani or Di Noto are likely to start in the middle of the park, with Buccianti set to feature upfront.

It will no longer be a matter of do or die for either side, only glory and a spot in the final are at stake, which will surely provide both teams with enough motivation to put up an upbeat game.

MARCO SEMINO
He could do nothing about the first two goals, and was wrongfooted by a deflection on the third one. That let alone, he provided the usual massive contribution, notably when he saved from Calcagno and Steiner. A big part of the team's promotion is his.

GIUSEPPE BUTTITTA
One of his best games this season. Self-assured and in control, even though he wasn't supported the usual way during the first half. He can be surely stand and be counted.

FABIO FRASSINELLI
Far from his best form and fitness, Fabio struggled at the back, his real position, the one he's shone at all season long. Deployed upfront, he allowed his team mates to carry the ball forward more often than not, and produced a pure striker's goal with a vital deflection.

MATTEO BOVALINO
The fact Clegg scored his first ever headed goal tells you all you need to know about how good his early cross was. Apart from that, he ran as usual, fought as usual, passed - brilliantly, that is - as usual and helped the back pack... as usual. He's got so much quality he probably wouldn't need to run this much to be appreciated, but he still does because that's what his side needs.
Moreover, he's featured in every single game played by the Pars this season.

ALDO MARLETTA
He scored when it mattered most, sealed promotion in style en route to his 30th goal of the season. He also provided Borreani with an assist to make it 2-0 early on. He's definitely back to his best, and it shows.

DAVIDE FILIPPI
He was deployed on the left flank during the early stages of the game, but it was almost immediately crystal clear that his presence was much needed at the back, following a slump or two from the defenders. When in his natural position, Calcagno tried to get past him a number of times, but to no effect, even though he got yellow-carded.

ANDREA BORREANI
He suffered from various injuries all season long, but he rose to the occasion and was key in delivering the "perfect killing", as he scored the 2-0 goal and provided a massive assist for the 4-3 one, after a brilliant run.
In the end, he turned up when he was needed.

GAFFER LUIGI VANIN
Left with no substitutions, he imposed his vision clearly before the game got underway. Give it your all, and think not. One may well argue that his voice's not the loudest one from the dugout, but to all effects, he's a promotion winning coach.

REFEREE DE GIULIO
One of the best black shirts in the whole AICS fold. He may have not made all the right calls, but he only dispensed one yellow card in a potentially tense game and always appeared on top of things.

Although promotion had looked like a done deal for a week or so, Dunfermline are officially a Division B club as of last night.
Rushes couldn't be bent over this time around, Amici Di Berto were outplayed, outmuscled and, broadly, outclassed, on a night when The Pars couldn't have had any harder conditions, with Buccianti and Di Noto serving their respective one match bans, and Cantelli being restrained to the sidelines with his ankle injury.
But there's more to Dunfermline than just on the pitch activity: the togetherness shown by the lads throughout has been, is and will be paramount to any future achievements the club will WANT to covet, that is because, and last night was no exception, sky appears to be the only limit for these guys.

Gaffer Vanin deployed Semino in goal, while Buttitta and Frassinelli initially composed the back two, Filippi providing a makeshift performance on the left flank and the midfield trio counting on the "golden pair" of ancient Praese memory, Marletta and Bovalino.
Borreani shrugged off the final few doubts and started upfront, playing the lone striker role during the first part of the first half.
No subtitutions available, Vanin was once again forced to enlist himself in amongst the bench players, although he didn't have to introduce himself during the game.

Dunfermline had some work to do during the early steps of the game, as forward Calcagno looked threatening, Semino proving his relevance once more, if needed, by parrying a fierce stike away.
As soon as The Pars pushed on full throttle, though, dire straits materialised for Berto. Borreani combined extremely well with Bovalino, who waited and waited some more before producing a perfect cross from the right flank. The ball flew across and in came Marletta, who opened the scoring with his usually weakest of features, a powerful header which left the goalkeeper embarrassed, the ball going in on his right hand post.

Berto tried to produce something relevant upfront, but it was a gross mistake which cost them, as Marletta stole the ball well inside his own half and carried it forward while speeding. He played it square in towards Borreani with his right, and the forward made no mistake in front of goal to make it 2-0 and open a vital cushion of their rivals.
Amici di Berto, though, have been fierce and strong opposition all season long, and they couldn't afford to lose the game without putting up a decent fight, which they did to good extent, as they managed to equalise, following two neat moves, both converted by forward Parodi, whose first came after a brilliant run and a precise low shot.
The equaliser, then, found a wrongfooted Dunfermline's back pack concede way too much room to the attacker, who blasted home from a narrow angle to level things up.
This forced Vanin to shuffle his pack a wee bit, as an unsettled Frassinelli was moved upfront, Borreani to the left flank and Filippi back to his usual defender spot.
The Pars had a couple of chances towards the end of the first half, with Bovalino shooting wide from long range and Marletta doing the same a few minutes later before referee De Giulio blew his whistle to signal half time.

HALF TIME: Dunfermline 2, Amici di Berto 2

The second half got underway and Dunfermline looked the better side throughout, as they regained the lead through Frassinelli, who coolly slotted home after a shot from Marletta appeared to be going wide. The defender-turned-forward put his left foot in and left Berto's keeper with little chance, as he was once again forced to pick up the ball from the back of the net.
Much to the Scots' disappointment, though, Berto benefitted from further luck as an innocuous effort from Parodi turned lethal, as the ball took a wicked deflection off Buttitta and found its way to the internal face of the right hand post and in the back of the net.
Dunfermline looked unfazed and resumed their run of play quite comfortably, looking sharper and more free-flowing than in other occasions, and created a few interesting openings.
The scores remained tied until a goalkick was quickly played by Semino into the path of Borreani, whose acceleration simply proved too difficult to handle for Berto defenders. Dunfermline's No 99 got past a couple of men and perfectly worked out the timing to feed Marletta, who calmly controlled the ball before firing a dipping shot to make it 4-3 from just outside the box.
In the lead for the third time in the game, it was Semino's time to keep that one goal cushion safe, which he did by means of at least 3 decisive saves to deny Calcagno, twice, and Parodi, once.
Time to seal it once and for all, game, set and match, came as another long clearance from Semino was intercepted by Frassinelli, who chested it back towards Marletta, the captain losing his marker with a quick bit of trickery and softly placing the ball past the keeper to make it 5-3 and seal promotion, now on official terms.

PREVIEW - Amici Di Berto

History is made not repeated so the third encounter between Dunfermline and Amici Di Berto this term is not likely to be either influenced or affected by the previous two ties between the clubs.
The sides have met twice before during the course of the season, and while the former concluded their regular season campaign at the summit of the table, the latter had to be content with the runners up spot a couple of points behind the Scots.
Back in January, Berto entertained Dunfermline and ended up on the receiving end of an embarrassing 4-1 scoreline, courtesy of goals from Cantelli and Buccianti and a brace from Marletta.
When the teams met in reverse fixtures later on, though, it was a different story altogether, as Amici Di Berto romped to victory by 6 goals to 2, although Buccianti's opener had given the Pars some hope. Bovalino late strike only proved little consolation as Berto temporarily re-gained the top of the table, only to be leapfrogged by Dunfermline themselves one week after that.
During the course of the finals, so far, Dunfermline collected a win, a defeat and a draw, against Moro Populars, Hellas Begato and Massacroni respectively, ending the 4 team group as runners up and therefore qualifying for the quarter finals directly.
Amici Di Berto, on their part, finished their own group third and had to get past the round of 12 stage, as they were held to a 3-3 draw by Carrapippi, only to win on penalties.

Gaffer Vanin will be most probably forced to field the only starting seven at his disposal, with Semino ahead of Perugini in goal, Buttitta and Frassinelli at the back, Bovalino, Marletta the usual pair in midfield, extremely likely to partner up with Filippi, who's a favourite to be deployed on the left flank.
In the absence of banned midfielder Di Noto and striker Buccianti, whose absences will add to the one of injured marksman Cantelli, it'll be Borreani who'll have to carry the striking burden upfront.
The only outfield substitute will be Gaffer Vanin himself, but The Pars, having now secured promotion, have widely shown, throughout the whole season, that they can do without many of their main men and will surely put up a fight to try to get past the hurdle and make it to the semifinals.

SEASON REVIEW - So Far...

Let's have a look at every single game so far this season... in 3 lines each

DUNFERMLINE - VIRTUSESTRI 3-8 (Bovalino, Buccianti, Frassinelli)
Bovalino opens the scoring but Dunfermline get slaughtered and kicked out of Liguria cup, although massive clearout of players begin, with a handful dismissed by the club for improper conduct

DUNFERMLINE - COMPAGNIA DELLE INDIE 3-3 [0-4] (Buccianti, Cantelli, Marletta)
Marletta equalises at the death, after goals from Buccianti and Cantelli had twice handed The Pars the lead, only to be reached and then leapfrogged. However, an off the pitch defeat is irrogated to Dunfermline following the unlawful fielding of defender Urru.

LAS CUEVAS - DUNFERMLINE 4-3 (Buccianti, Bovalino, Marletta)
Dunfermline play well but Di Noto's dismissal proves costly as The Pars find themselves with no points, and their sponsorship deal cancelled off, after two games in the league.

NEW REDS - DUNFERMLINE 2-5 (Buccianti, Cantelli 3, Borreani)
Frassinelli's forced to play in goal owing to the absence of any recognised keeper, but Dunfermline obtain the first of a string of 13 wins, courtesy of a hat-trick by Cantelli and goals from Buccianti and Borreani.

ASTON VILLA SCASSI - DUNFERMLINE 2-9 (Buccianti 4, Cantelli 2, Bovalino 2, Frassinelli)
Dunfermline thump Villa with ease to collect their 2nd win on the trot against not-so-irresistible opposition.

DUNFERMLINE - NEVER ALONE 5-3 (Cantelli 3, Buccianti 2)
Cantelli and Buccianti concoct a 5-3 win in a derby rival against Never Alone, a 3rd successive win and an initial grasp of the positives the season is going to reserve for the lads.

INTERNAZIONALE - DUNFERMLINE 1-5 (Cantelli, Di Noto, Bovalino, Buccianti 2)
A 4th win in a row leaves Dunfermline a few points shy of first place, while Buccianti caps a marvellous scoring moment with another brace.

DUNFERMLINE - XENEIXES 9-1 (Cantelli 2, Buccianti 2, Marletta, Di Noto 3, Frassinelli)
Yet another thrashing as The Pars ease past Xeneixes to collect their second early whistle victory to attain their 5th win on the bounce.

AMICI DI BERTO - DUNFERMLINE 1-4 (Cantelli, Marletta 2, Buccianti)
The long lasting duel at the top sees the first round fall Dunfermline's way, as Marletta grasps a his first set piece goal of the season, after Cantelli had opened the scoring, only for Steiner to equalise. Further goals from Buccianti and again from the captain seal a famous win.

DUNFERMLINE - SAMPIERDARENA 2-2 [4-0] (Buccianti, Marletta)
Dunfermline draw on the pitch but win off it courtesy of the unlawful fielding of goalkeeper Bruzzone. A tight game had been solved mainly by means of set pieces.

LE CAFE - DUNFERMLINE 5-6 (Cantelli, Marletta 4, Frassinelli)
Marletta produces a marvel of a goal, on top of another 3, 2 of which from the penalty spot, to add to Cantelli and Frassinelli and help Dunfermline en route to the top-two. A glorious display capped by moments of individual and collective brilliance.

DUNFERMLINE - BORUSSIA 4-2 (Cantelli, Marletta 2, Bovalino)
Cantelli and Bovalino do it the stylish way, Marletta the essential one, and Borussia are beaten by 4 goals to 2, for a 9th successive win in the league.

COMPAGNIA DELLE INDIE - DUNFERMLINE 3-6 (Cantelli 2, Marletta, Di Noto, Buccianti, Bovalino)
Cantelli scores twice in the opening minutes and Dunfermline remain in the driving seat all game long, this time no off the pitch breaches can deprive Dunfermline of their 10th win in a row.

DUNFERMLINE - LAS CUEVAS 4-1 (Buccianti 2, Marletta, Cantelli)
Buccianti back to his best as Las Cuevas are defeated in a match which sees Perugini making his debut in goal.

DUNFERMLINE - NEW REDS 4-2 (Buccianti, Marletta 3)
Dunfermline complete the first of a series of doubles, as a hat-trick from Marletta and an opener from Buccianti do the trick.

DUNFERMLINE - ASTON VILLA SCASSI 9-1 (Di Noto, Cantelli 3, Marletta 3, Bovalino 2)
Dunfermline continue on their brilliant run of form by easily disposing of minnows Aston Villa, by 9 goals to 1.

NEVER ALONE - DUNFERMLINE 3-3 (Cantelli 2, Bovalino)
Back from a thoroughly enjoyable trip to Scotland, the lads somewhat falter on the pitch, as they take a few too many risks and fail to impress, having their 13 game winning streak abrupted.

DUNFERMLINE - INTERNAZIONALE 9-3 (Di Noto 3, Marletta 2, Cantelli, Own Goal, Filippi, Buccianti)
Filippi scores his first for the club to early terminate an easy game, setting the Pars back to winning ways.

XENEIXES - DUNFERMLINE 4-5 (Cantelli 5)
Cantelli takes it all on his shoulder and single-handedly produces an unbelievable comeback from 2 goals down with only minutes to go. Pure class.

DUNFERMLINE - AMICI DI BERTO 2-6 (Buccianti, Bovalino)
Dunfermline experience their worst of the season, as they're annihilated by Amici di Berto at their home ground, contextually losing the group leadership.

SAMPIERDARENA - DUNFERMLINE 1-2 (Marletta, Cantelli)
Marletta fails from the spot, only to be given a second chance as Buccianti plays a wonderful ball to help him score. Cantelli seals it at the death and Dunfermline make certain of their top-two status, contextually regaining the summit of the table.

DUNFERMLINE - LE CAFE 5-4 (Cantelli 4, Buccianti)
Cantelli produces yet another incredible performance to fire the lads up closer to the title, whilst Buccianti plays his part duly.

BORUSSIA - DUNFERMLINE 3-4 (Cantelli 3, Marletta)
Cantelli ends the regular season on yet another high, while Clegg shows signs of improvement towards a return to his best form, scoring from a customary free-kick.

DUNFERMLINE - MORO POPULARS 4-1 (Di Noto, Marletta, Cantelli 2)
Di Noto gets on the pitch and scores, before Marletta finds yet another moment of brilliance from a set piece. Cantelli scores a brace, business as usual.

DUNFERMLINE - HELLAS BEGATO 1-3 (Marletta)
The Pars waste a number of chances while Hellas net three from four goal attempts altogether. Football, that is...

MASSACRONI - DUNFERMLINE 2-2 (Marletta, Buccianti)
Free-kicks, free-kicks, free-kicks. Marletta scores one and makes another, on a night when Semino produces a stunning performance (in his capacity of defender, to the surprise of many) and Dunfermline gain promotion...

IS THE BEST PART OF THIS STORY YET TO BE WRITTEN?
WE SHALL SEE...

MASSACRONI - Analysis

LEONARDO PERUGINI
Perhaps he wasn't quick enough to react on the first goal occasion, but to his credit the ball got deflected en route to goal at least once.
He produced a couple of miracle saves in the second half, and when he couldn't get there, he was helped by the crossbar, once, and his brilliant defenders, twice.

DAVIDE FILIPPI
Possibly the best man on the pitch wearing a white shirt on the night, the ease with which he handled proceedings at the back must have irritated the opponents a wee bit.
Self-assured and ferocious, one of the most consistent players of a marvellous season.

MARCO SEMINO
Stand up for the lad. A brilliant goalkeeper all season long, a brilliant defender on the most important night. Had it not been for the 2nd Massacroni goal, he would've produced an immaculate performance, but to be honest, he did extremely well and not only will he be thanked for his ability, but also for his commitment to the common cause.

ALDO MARLETTA
Free-kick, goal. Another free-kick, and Buccianti made it 2. He huffed and puffed on the right flank until his energies were drained and was shifted back in the middle of the park, where he belongs, mostly. He played a glorious ball in towards Buccianti, but also lost a couple of balls dangerously.

ALESSIO DI NOTO
He got a silly yellow card which could've proven costly for the final bit of the season, but he played beautifully, at times, and sloppily, at times.
A couple of brilliant openings could've amounted to as many goals, but Marletta and Buccianti couldn't find the back of the net.

MATTEO BOVALINO
He sacrificed for the team, as he has done indeed all season long, which is not something that usual for such a talented player. Even when not at his best form, he managed to deny Pedroni, a guy who's scored 43 goals so far and whose ability is absolutely out of the question.

ALBERTO BUCCIANTI
He'd clearly stated his intents before the game. He'd get brought down a number of times, and Clegg would make it count from the ensuing free kicks. Result: he got brought down once, and Clegg scored, he got brought down once more, and he scored himself with the thinnest of touches. He battled on all game long, got cautioned for sillily throwing the ball away, spurned a glorious chance, but all in all, he fought for the team, and he's one of the most proactive parts of a history of success. Along with his friends, which tastes all the better.

MANAGER LUIGI VANIN
He was ready to thrust himself on the pitch, had it been necessary owing to the shortage of personnel he was forced to deal with.
Luckily enough, his playing services weren't required, and although he got things wrong once or twice during the course of the season, he also got them all completely right a few times as well.
Last night was no exception, even though he hadn't any realistic subs at his disposal, he still managed to spot one or two alternative solutions.

REFEREE MEJIA
Much in the same way Modica had appeared one of the best refs in the league, Mejia once again proved to be on the other end of the pecking order, as he managed to flag a few too many cards in a game that wasn't really affected by continuous foul play. Not that he got any major decisions wrong, but his handling of the game was far from impressive.

DUNFERMLINE - MASSACRONI 2-2

Promotion was finally gained by Dunfermline Athletic Football Club, on a Sunday night that saw the mighty Pars be held to a 2-2 draw by fellow league group winners Massacroni.
However, Moro Populars disposed of Hellas Begato elsewhere, to signify that Dunfermline finished within the top-two of their Excellence Playoff group, just one point shy of Massacroni themselves, thus virtually securing their Division B status ahead of the 2008/2009 season.
In fact, should Dunfermline not make it any further than the quarter finals next Sunday, against either Amici di Berto or Carrapippi, they'd still be guaranteed an overall 5th place in the whole Division C pecking order, or in the worst case scenario - should Massacroni be kicked out as well, that is - they'd be occupying 6th place, with 4 places guaranteed by AICS and as many likely to be made available following next season's tiers draft.

Dunfermline couldn't have been at a lower point, on paper, against one of the best sides in AICS Division C fold, before the match got underway.
Gaffer Vanin was forced to shuffle his pack, and deployed Perugini in goal, whilst Filippi's partner in defence was Marco Semino! Yes, him, Dunfermline's very own goalkeeper who reminded everyone of his Semi-pro past as a defender, which showed on the night, as he was one of the best men on the pitch.
Marletta led his side on the pitch and was deployed on the right, with Di Noto taking charge in the middle of the park, and Bovalino being played wide on the left, taking care of 43 goal boy Bruno Pedroni.
Tuscan striker Buccianti played the lone striker role, and the only sub for a weary side was represented by the gaffer, who included himself as an outfield replacement.
Marco Cantelli also featured on the bench, although his crutches were hardly signs of good hope ahead of an unlikely comeback towards the final few steps of the season, while American pal Drew Fasolini waved goodbye to the side off the pitch, ahead of his forthcoming return to the States.
But boy what a goodbye he was waved back by his team-mates, who produced heroics throughout, in such volatile fashion and circumstances, a nerveracking, if not mouthwatering, performance, which will forever stand in the lads' hearts and minds.

Dunfermline seemed unfazed by the number of notable absentees they had to put up with, Frassinelli, Cantelli, Borreani and Buttitta all missing out, and swiftly took control of proceedings, Buccianti operating extremely wisely upfront.
Esibiti had a good chance for Massacroni early on, but he failed to convert it from just outside the box, and minutes later Buccianti earned a precious free kick from about 20 yards out.
Marletta stepped up and, more importantly, lived up to his set piece virtuoso status, converting in quite some style to establish The Pars in the lead.
Massacroni tried to bounce back, but Buccianti was once again brought down just ahead of the halfway line.
Marletta took it once more, Buccianti slightly deflected the ball past Esposito and Dunfermline found themselves with an unexpected, although well deserved, two goal cushion.
Both sides kept battling on until the end of the first half, and it was another free-kick that handled Massacroni a sort of lifeline, as Rutigliano's set piece was deflected off Dunfermline's wall, leaving Perugini wrongfooted and partly bridging the gap between the sides before the half time whistle.

HALF TIME: Dunfermline 2, Massacroni 1

The second half got underway and Massacroni seemed to be going from strength to strength, as they restrained Dunfermline to a mere control of their own half of the pitch for lengthy spells.
Semino and Filippi had a huge load of work to do to keep Sacco at bay, which they did to good extent, until the Massacroni striker took advantage of a rare moment of sloppy marking, to receive the ball from a throw and quickly turn and shot past Perugini to level things up at 2-2.
Buccianti got yellow-carded, as had Di Noto early on in the first half, meaning that both players will miss out on the next game, which at that stage appeared to be very likely against Sampierdarena in a round of 16 tie which would've probably left the Pars with little hope of going through to the next stage.
Esibiti rattled the woodwork from long range with an impressive half volley, and had it not been for a couple of brilliant saves by Perugini, Dunfermline would've found themselves on the receiving hand of a 3-2 - or wider margin - defeat.
Semino pulled off a miracle line clearance of his own as Pedroni appeared to have scored from close range, meanwhile Di Noto created a great opening, only for Marletta to shoot straight at Esposito.
The most glorious of chances, though, was yet to fall Dunfermline's way, as Di Noto was once again spot on in feeding Marletta into space, the midfielder played a backward square ball in towards Buccianti, by then unmarked and only a touch away from Division B.
The striker rushed it, as indeed he was required to do, but faltered and the ball somehow found its way into Esposito's gloves.

Fortunately for the lads, much better news came in later on the night, as ill defender Fabio Frassinelli called from his Sampierdarena home to tell the guys that Moro Populars had had the better of Hellas Begato, with a 2-1 win.
Promotion, albeit not officially yet, had been reached.
