PREVIEW - Grifone 2007

GENOA - Dunfermline need a win from their last group game if they're to be certain of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Primavera Tournament.
Should they get defeated, no chance of going through will become available, whereas a draw could still see them through, although they'd be left relying on the other group encounter, between title holders Guardian Thistle and Genova '07, and the chances of a favourable combination of results appear to be rather limited should that be the case.
All in all, Dunfermline, in their relatively new shape, have looked competitive enough to battle it out with the best, although they still seem to lack some cutting edge, that "definitive" and defining act which separates the good from the great.
Gaffer Vanin should once again be able to count on all available members of the squad for the crucial tie, set to get underway at 9 pm on Wednesday, with both goalkeepers, Semino and Perugini, staking their respective claims for the No 1 jersey.
In defence, two among Frassinelli, Merello and Ducco will get the nod, with Ducco also a likely candidate for a midfield slot.
Talking of which, the whole central pack, consisting of Marletta, Bovalino, Finotti and Cantelli will be at the manager's disposal, with Rossi expected to start upfront.
Buccianti, who is expected to return from his international aid mission in Haiti, could join the ranks should the club go through to the next round.

live to Haiti: the power of the group

ciao a tutti!!! 10.46 p.m.

Guardian Thistle / HOW THE PARS RATED

LEONARDO PERUGINI (6.5/10) - Survived a major scare as the ball bounced past him early in the first half and looked a self-assured, and reassuring presence, throughout, and also produced an excellent save from a close range effort. Was unfortunate on the equalising goal.

FABIO FRASSINELLI (6.5/10) - He triggered the 2-0 goal move and was as good as ever in snuffing out any attacks thrown his way. Unfortunately, he slightly injured himself and called himself out of the game at the interval.

DAVIDE DUCCO (6.5/10) - Finally made his debut for the Pars, and showed good composure throughout, although he often relied on long balls instead of starting the flow of play from the back, which he can surely do given his attributes.

ALESSANDRO MERELLO (6.5/10) - Good debut for him as well, a notable last gasp intervention to deny Arbore a clearcut chance and lots of well-timed headers to send the ball up the park.

MATTEO BOVALINO (5.5/10) - As the rest of the midfield, he was penalised by a team spirit which didn't involve as much passing as it should have. Was forced off the field early in the second half.

ALDO MARLETTA (5.5/10) - Didn't make much of an impact on the game, as the midfield was often cut off the run of play by long balls which weren't too effective after all.

MARCO CANTELLI (6.5/10) - Scored a goal and caused the other one with a good move. He was often left to deal with two or three defenders at a time.

FILIPPO FINOTTI (6/10) - He was excellent defensively, and even had a goalscoring chance with a header late on, he was expected to start, considering his very good debut last week.

STEFANO ROSSI (5.5/10) - This time, he didn't really have too many chances to bite, although his commitment wasn't questionable and he tried his best. He was blatantly brought down in the box seconds before Thistle equalised, but poor refereeing penalised him and the team on that occasion.

GUARDIAN THISTLE 2, DUNFERMLINE 2

CA DE RISSI - Dunfermline surrendered a two-goal lead in the Scottish derby against title holders Guardian Thistle, and are now left in the balance, needing a victory in the final group game, against group leaders Grifone 2007, in order to make sure of qualification to the knockout stages.
The game wasn't a pretty watch at all, with both sides failing to create many openings and a referee whose repeated whistles often disrupted the flow of the game.

Vanin deployed Perugini in goal, while Ducco eventually made his debut for the Pars, and was paired to Frassinelli in defence. Marletta was in the middle of the park, with Bovalino and Cantelli either side of him and Rossi completed the starting lineup in the striker position.
The match appeared patchy from the start, with little space for moves and a general refusal, on both ends, to take the flow of play to the opponents.
Perugini survived a major scare as an innoucuous ball bounced past him and hit the crossbar, but soon after that Dunfermline took the lead.
Rossi and Cantelli combined on the right flank and the latter played a square ball towards the middle of the box, but a Thistle defender turned the ball past his own keeper with an unlucky touch.
Having taken the lead, Dunfermline were expected to relax and start playing some attractive fixture, which didn't happen, though, as distances between defence, midfield and the striker looked too big.
From a counter attacking move, though, Frassinelli managed to feed the ball into the path of Cantelli, with the influential No 6 taking his time on the ball before dispatching a fierce effort Thistle keeper failed to deal with, thus gifting the Pars a confidence-igniting two-goal lead.
At that stage, the Pars were in the driving seat but started faltering even more in their game plan, and while no signs of reaction looked upcoming on Thistle side, they still managed to reduce their arrears as a free-kick on the edge of the box was played with a pass which, as often has been the case recently, left the Pars' wall and defenders on the wrong foot, with Guardian No 77 coolly slotting home.

HALF TIME: Guardian Thistle 1, Dunfermline 2

Proceedings were resumed and Merello was given his debut as well, as Vanin replaced the injured Frassinelli with the former Never Alone man, while Finotti came on for Rossi, and Cantelli was moved upfront.
Again, Dunfermline did themselves no favours at all, as they kept on going for a very direct, too direct perhaps, approach, involving long balls thrown upfront, with no real attempt to play the ball as much as their players' ablities would suggest.
Even so, they managed to hold on to the positive results, although the main threats came from Thistle, with Perugini, in his best form, saving from a close range effort before Merello produced a miracle of a defensive block as he denied a certain goal to Arbore, turning the ball around for a corner in what had appeared an open goal.
Minutes before the final whistle Rossi, who had been re-introduced for Bovalino, was blatantly brought down in the box, but the ref somehow tethered under pressure and failed to award the penalty kick, which was always going to be such.
Few seconds later, at the other end, Dunfermline eventually squandered their advantage, as the ball eluded Marletta and Perugini's control, with the captain trying to save on the line, which he appeared to have done, although the man in black adjudged the ball to have completely crossed the line and therefore awarded the goal.
Dunfermline will now need to step it up against Grifone 2007, if they're to have a good chance of progressing to the next round.

PREVIEW - GUARDIAN THISTLE

GENOA - Dunfermline will lock horns with Primevera title defenders Guardian Thistle, for what will be a Scottish derby to all effects, by the evidence of the name the opponents proudly bear.
Thistle were beaten 3-2 by Grifone 2007 on the opening day of their title defending quest, while the Pars played out a hard-fought 3-3 draw against Genova '07.
For the game, scheduled to get underway at 10 pm on Wednesday 24th, Alessandro Merello and Davide Ducco should both eventually make their debuts in a competitive game for the club, after missing out on the first group game earlier this week.

With Buccianti still away on international aid duty, Filippi otherwise engaged and Crosetti loaned out to Olimpique Sampedenna for the whole duration of the competition, the roster at Vanin's disposal should be the following

01 Marco Semino
12 Leonardo Perugini

04 Alessandro Merello
10 Fabio Frassinelli
14 Davide Ducco

05 Aldo Marletta
06 Marco Cantelli

DAFC - GENOVA '07 / HOW PARS RATED

MARCO SEMINO 6/10: Not a lot he could do about the goals he conceded, he was the usual self-assured, and reassuring presence for the whole team.

FABIO FRASSINELLI 7.5/10 (MAN OF THE MATCH): The best Frassi we've seen for a while. He scored a great goal capping a fine collective move and rebuffed any attempts opponents threw his way.

MATTEO BOVALINO 6.5/10: He's a talented mifielder, but once again he was required to perform in defence, which he did in wonderful fashion. Shame for the 2-1 goal, for which he shares some responsibility with Marletta, his game would've been perfect otherwise.

FILIPPO FINOTTI 6.5/10: Good debut for the curly-haired lad, a good presence down the flank and was unfortunate not to score with a first half chip shot.

ALDO MARLETTA 6.5/10: He stepped up his game in the second half, and had a couple of chances from two free-kicks the keeper parried away. He was a bit careless on the 2-1 goal occasion, but he triggered the last chance of the game with a virtuoso bit of trickery.

MARCO CANTELLI 7/10: He was as lucky on the goal as unfortunate on another couple of occasions. Badly lost the ball on the 3-3 goal, but he's a stalwart of the team and he seems to have a natural get-on feeling with Rossi, his attacking partner.

STEFANO ROSSI 7/10: What a debut! A good equalising goal and a spot-on delivery for Frassinelli on the 2-2 goal occasion. A lot of stubborness and pace to complete the jigsaw for a player who's likely to prove a bargain transfer.

DUNFERMLINE 3 GENOVA '07 3

CA DE RISSI - Dunfermline got their Primavera Tournament underway with a hard-fought 3-3 draw against Genova 07, featuring former Par Flavio Lenza amongst their ranks.
Vanin, the gaffer, deployed Semino in goal, Bovalino was paired with Frassinelli in defence, while Marletta took centre stage and was flanked by Cantelli and Finotti, with fellow debutant Stefano Rossi playing the lone striker role.

Literally seconds from kick-off and the Pars found themselves on the trail, as a long forward cross was beautifully headed past Semino by the Genova centre forward.
Dunfermline didn't lose their composure and started playing some intriguing football at time, with Cantelli posing the main and more constant threats to the opponents.
The Pars did equalise through a stubborn and effective initiative by Rossi, who controlled a high ball and turned before dispatching a right-footed effort which left the keeper a wee fazed, with the ball sliding past him.
Dunfermline looked good in possession, but a single mistake cost them heavily, as Bovalino and Marletta failed to combine on the edge of their own box, thus leaving one of Genova's midfielder with the easiest of finishes to re-establish them in the lead.
The Pars' opponents hit the woodwork with a long range effort, and so did Finotti at the other end, with a delicious chip shot which could have better luck.
Dunfermline, wearing their brand new red shirt for the first time in a competitive game, equalised once more with a marvellous counter-attacking move, started and finished by Frassinelli and also involving Cantelli and Rossi, whose square delivery left Frassi with a sitter in front of goal to make it 2-2.
Just before the half time whistle, Cantelli played a good square ball into the path of Marletta, the captain's shot powering just over the bar.

HALF TIME: Dunfermline 2, Genova '07 2

Proceedings were resumed and Dunfermline looked set to dominate the game, which they partially did as their tempo grew while the opponents' diminished.
A lot of possession and a couple of good chances, notably a great effort from Cantelli parried away in equal beautiful fashion by the keeper, were good grounds for the 3-2 goal, which saw Cantelli get rid of his direct opponent and unleashed a shot which cannonned off another defender, thus wrongfooting the goalie to make it 3-2.
Rossi and Cantelli combined beautifully on a counter attacking move, with the latter sending his effort just over the bar, either side of two Marletta free-kicks, both saved by Genova's keeper.
Just as Dunfermline looked to be on the brink of winning their opening game, they were punished on the break when Cantelli lost a precious ball just outside the opponents' box, thus triggering a counter attack with the side exposed.
Genova '07 had their equaliser with a shot from outside the box which left Semino with no chance.
Dunfermline had a further chance to win the game towards the end of the game, as Marletta produced a virtuoso trick and fed the ball into the path of Rossi, who squared the ball, only for Cantelli to fire just wide of the post.
A good game, a new beginning for a promising revival... But only one point.

PARS WHITEWASHED IN FINAL WARM UP GAME

A depleted Dunfermline side were swept away by 9 goals to 3 in the final warm up game ahead of the forthcoming Primavera Tournament, set to get underway today, with the Pars playing Genova 07 on Wednesday.
Two goals from Cantelli and one from Buccianti weren't enough to avoid embarrassment against a talent brimming side who, however, had too much of the ball, the more and the better chances and were worthy winners.
Despite such heavy loss, though, there's no reason to feel pessimistic ahead of the first competitive game for a month or so, as the Pars have rarely been brilliant in friendly games in their history.

PREVIEW - Dunfermline - Genova 07

GENOA - Old season, new season? Dunfermline will get their Primavera Tournament underway by taking on Genova 07 on Wednesday 17th June, kick-off 10 pm.
The first ever meeting between the two sides will also serve the purpose of inaugurating Dunfermline's brand new jerseys, on top of providing Luigi Vanin, the gaffer, with a first competitive test for the club's new signings.
Marco Semino and Leonardo Perugini will both be involved, as the search for a goalkeeper for next season has been provisionally halted, at least as far as this very tournament is concerned.
That is unless something unpredictable should happen before Wednesday.

Anyhow, Davide Filippi has declared his desire to be dispensed from the competition, as he is in the process of giving his new flat the finishing touches, and with Fausto Crosetti loaned out to Olimpique Sampedenna, Vanin's options in defence are limited in number, but certainly not in quality, as both Fabio Frassinelli and Alessandro Merello should be available. Davide Ducco should finally make his competitive debut for the club, as he's been with the club for a while but wasn't eligible to play up to now.
Also in midfield, Aldo Marletta, Matteo Bovalino, Filippo Finotti and Marco Cantelli will most likley fight it out for 3 starting slots, with Stefano Rossi expected to make his debut as well, while Alberto Buccianti will be away on international aid duty in Haiti.

The team roster for the game should therefore look as follows

1 Marco Semino
12 Leonardo Perugini

4 Alessandro Merello
10 Fabio Frassinelli
14 Davide Ducco

5 Aldo Marletta
6 Marco Cantelli
11 Matteo Bovalino

PARS GO RED IN DAWN OF NEW ERA

Genoa - A lemonade toast (are we sure we're Scottish?) at Marco Cantelli's garage celebrated the beginning of Dunfermline's new deal.
Club captain Aldo Marletta introduced something new, and special, to Cantelli himself, Fabio Frassinelli and new boy Filippo Finotti.

Basically, The Pars have gone red, quite literally.
Having donned their white shirts in the past two seasons, Dunfermline will now utilise an Adidas branded red shirt, a white strip on the right and... yes... our very own club badge, designed by Frassi a year-and-a-half ago, embedded on the left...

The shirt has also been presented to another new boy, Stefano Rossi, earlier this morning, and the full kit will be handed to all other members of the squad next Wednesday, as the Pars will begin their quest in the Primavera Tournament.

A quick glance at the new shirt can be found at the bottom of this webpage...

Let's restore the glory...

DUNFERMLINE - SQUAD NUMBERS ANNOUNCED

GENOA - While the hunt for next season's goalkeeper closes in on a result, which should be announced early next week, Marco Semino is still very much in the frame, and he shall be part of the squad competing in the Primavera Tournament, set to get underway on June 17th.
So is Leonardo Perugini, but while the stopper's role is yet to be assigned, the remainder of the squad can be said to be pretty much assembled by now, the only doubt hingeing on whether Davide Ducco will be fully available for the 09/10 campaign.

Meanwhile, squad numbers have been provisionally assigned as follows:

01 Marco SEMINO
04 Alessandro MERELLO
05 Aldo MARLETTA
06 Marco CANTELLI
07 Stefano ROSSI
08 Davide FILIPPI
09 Alberto BUCCIANTI
10 Fabio FRASSINELLI

FRIENDLY: Dunfermline 6, Olimpique Sampedenna 3

GENOA - Dunfermline may not be back to their vintage best just yet, but last night's friendly match against an Olimpique Sampedenna also featuring their own loanee Fausto Crosetti, showed encouraging signs ahead of the forthcoming Primavera Tournament, which shall act as a propeller for next season.

A couple of new faces in, a couple of unwanted presences out, and Dunfermline looked lively from the start, even though they couldn't count on a number of first teamers.

Vanin deployed Perugini in goal, with Filippi and Merello composing the defensive pack, Marletta took centre stage and was flanked by the other new boy Finotti and the usual, lethal, Cantelli.

Stefano Rossi got the nod to start upfront and the game got underway.

A goalless first half had a few talking points nevertheless, with attempts being snuffed out at both ends.

Frassinelli came in for Filippi at the beginning of the second half and the deadlock was broken soon afterward through a very unfortunate Merello own goal.

Dunfermline, though, looked good in possession and a Marletta through ball found Rossi who, however, had all the work to do, which he did incidentally, as he quickly rounded his direct opponent before dispatching an unsavable left-footed effort into the top corner.

Minutes later, the striker and Cantelli combined beautifully, with the former setting the latter up for the easiest of finishes, 2-1.

Cantelli turned provider himself as a spot on through ball found the upcoming Finotti unmarked, the Turin-born winger sidefooting into the bottom corner coolly to make it 3-1.

Marletta got on the scoresheet as well, as he latched on to a poor clearance from the opponents' defence and, in customary style, drove his half-volley low into the bottom corner.

Olimpique Sampedenna pulled one back, but the gap was restored when Cantelli's miscued effort fell kindly to Rossi's prowess, the striker netting from close range for the 5-2 goal.

Then, it was for Marletta and Cantelli to combine in quite some style, with the No 6 through ball finding the captain, who could only score, which he did, from close range.

Olimpique did pull one back before the final whistle, but Dunfermline were worthy winners after all.

As per above, it's early days to know whether The Pars are on the right course to their former glory, but the signs look promising...
