Dunfermline slipped to fourth following a hard fought draw against WLF Genova, thus signalling the virtual end of their top-two chase and, broadly, a dip in form which would raise a few eyebrows ahead of the playoffs.
Perugini deployed Semino in goal, with Frassinelli and Filippi in defence, while Marletta retained his spot in the middle of the park, flanked by Bovalino and Boccaccio, and Buccianti completed the starting VII upfront.
Dunfermline had the better of the early exchanges and Boccaccio took a series of consecutive corners. As a result, Marletta volleyed from outside the box, with WLF keeper conceding another corner-kick to deny him. From the ensuing one, though, a poor heading clearance let the ball fall kindly to Marletta, who half-volleyed home to establish the Pars in the lead.
Dunfermline looked on song with Marletta dictating the tempo in the game and Filippi often bringing the ball up the park, but just when it looked they were in full control of the game, the usual moment(s) of madness struck and WLF found themselves 3-1 up before half-time, the first two goals coming from as many free-kicks, while the third was the result of a well concocted move and a fine layback pass which left their striker free to wrongfoot Semino from close range.
Boccaccio had hit the post in the process, but it appeared too little.
HALF TIME: WLF Genova 3, Dunfermline 1
Cantelli was introduced for Buccianti and Crosetti replaced Frassinelli, with Dunfermline desperately trying to send their charges forward for an unlikely onslaught.
The initial signs of hope for an incredible comeback materialised as Cantelli swiftly controlled a Semino clearance and rounded his marker, but his shot went well wide of the upright.
Cantelli was unlucky once again a few minutes later, but his shot was poorly parried by WLF keeper and the ball fell kindly to Bovalino who shot home with a virtually open goal to reduce Dunfermline's arrears.
Boccaccio caused havoc down the right flank and one of his shots was once again parried by the opponents' goalkeeper, with the ball reaching Cantelli who hit it first time to equalise with still 10 minutes or so left.
WLF, who had hit the woodwork during the course of the first half, were spared as a magnificent move involving Marletta, Cantelli and Boccaccio found its inspired climax with the No 2's excellent through ball, which was met by Bovalino who only managed to hit the post himself.
Bovalino had another chance that was kept out by the keeper, although the ensuing corner-kick brought yet another goal, as Filippi was quick to react for his second goal of the season.
With their odd comeback completed at 4-3 up, Dunfermline once again appeared in full control of the game, until a poor referee awarded the host a non-exixtent free kick, which ended up with a square pass poorly defended and the ball finding its way on to the back of the net to add to Dunfermline's worries.
