On one of the crucial nights of the season, Dunfermline faltered, and incurred their worst defeat in the league this season.
Up against Amici di Berto, and on the back of a performance against Xeneixes which shoul've rung more than one bell, the Pars were absolutely outplayed, outrun and outmuscled by a team who've now deservedly regained the top of the table.
More importantly, and yet more bells should ring ahead of next week's encounter against Excellence Playoff hopefuls Sampierdarena, their cushion over the West Genoa outfit has now been reduced to only four points.
As it is, hopes of snatching a decisive win look very thin, whereas a draw would most definitely settle things, leaving Dunfermline with only 2 points to collect from their final two games against Le Café and Borussia.
On the contrary, should Dunfermline lose to Sampierdarena as well, they'd have to win the remaining two fixtures in order to secure a top-two status.
On the night, Vanin deployed Semino in goal, Frassinelli and Filippi in defence, Marletta and Bovalino in midfield, while Buccianti and Cantelli partnered up uprfont.
Which basically means no notable absentees, as indeed such lineup has been widely and succesfully utilised during the course of a lengthy and brilliant season, a season the lads will not be too keen to throw away at its crucial stage, even though they appeared tired in their minds and their fitness.
Things didn't look bad at all for the lads in the first half, during the course of which Marletta hit the woodwork from a long range free kick and Buccianti established the home side in the lead, taking advantage of a loose ball and driving it past Berto's keeper coolly to make it 1-0.
As half time was near, Dunfermline conceded two goals during stoppage time, the former coming from a free-kick and ensuing short range finish, the ball hitting the internal bit of the left hand post before finding its way to the back of the net.
Seconds later, Berto took the lead courtesy of a great through ball, which found a brilliant striker who coolly controlled it and blasted it past Semino.
HALF TIME: Dunfermline 1, Amici Di Berto 2
Proceedings were resumed and Di Noto was introduced for Bovalino, but things took yet another bad twist as Frassinelli put through his own net from a corner-kick.
Bad luck was to blame for that one, but the remainder of the game only saw the lads deteriorate their level of performance, and Berto snatched 3 more to make it an unbelievable 6-1 scoreline.
Buccianti hit the bar in the process, with Berto's goalie being called upon once or twice.
Just before the final whistle, Bovalino made it 2-6 from close range, after latching onto a loose ball from a Marletta's kick, blocked by the goalkeeper.
Too little, too late.
